About About

Since 2006, Aaike Stuart (NL, 1982) has developed a diverse artistic practice with a focus on the moving image.

He was part of the artist collective Authentic Boys (together with Gregory Stauffer, Johannes Dullin and Boris van Hoof) between 2007 and 2018. They stumbled upon one another while hitchhiking, reflecting of the spirit of their collective work: intuitive, humorous and in tune with their surroundings. Uniting their respective artistic practices they created a diverse range of works, including short films (In Character, Bad Luck City, Threesome), performances (Chakra Gang Bang, Go Home, Natural Fiction Circus), and spatial video works (Happyland). Their extensive Rehearsing Revolution project made the phenomenon of revolution a personal subject for over 1000 youths from Rotterdam, Birmingham, and Nyon.

He has collaborated with numerous theater and performance groups as a videographer, most notably with the theater director and educator Uta Plate since 2020. Under the name Stuart+Plate, they work with groups of non-professionals as their artistic accomplices, exploring and unfolding individual life stories, fantasies or fears. Their participatory film projects are characterized by intense and touching personal encounters.

For each project, Aaike Stuart finds a fitting approach to the moving image—sometimes in the shape of documentary fiction, sometimes using the camera and projector in experimental and unconventional ways, but always with a musical heartbeat and a lighthearted tone.
