Who defines the identity of a character on the scene of daily life? This film explores the techniques we apply every day to design, affirm and enervate who we are. It’s also a film about film, in which the same techniques are being used. What’s real now? When can we identify ourselves with someone else? And who’s the director of our daily performance?
Performing Life shows a man looking the spectator in the eyes, describing himself five times using short, sober phrases. In between the monologues he performs short actions.
Perfoming Life was one of my graduation films at the Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam and has been shown in a cinema- as well as in an installation-setting. It was presented in combination with an illustrated, self titled booklet.
